San Salvador based TACA Airlines announced this week that they are adding new flights between New York City and Medellin (via San Jose, Costa Rica) as well as between New York City and Guayaquil (via El Salvador).

The new segment, San Jose – Medellin, will be effective from July 15, 2010, with the full New York City – Medellin route available starting July 17, 2010. This new flight from TACA Airlines will have a frequency of two times per week.

The new flight between New York City and Guayaquil will be effective August 1, 2010 and will operate three times per week.

Avianca of Colombia have announced a new direct, twice weekly flight between Madrid and Medellin, commencing July 3rd 2010 using an Airbus A330 aircraft.

The new scheduled service will operate every Thursday and Sunday from the new Terminal 4 Satellite at Madrid’s Barajas International airport departing at 13:10 local time. The return flight from the Colombian provincial capital of Medellin departs at 1820 on Wednesday and Saturday arriving in Madrid at 1110 local time the next morning.

With this new frequency Avianca now operate 19 weekly flights between Colombia and Europe. Convenient connections are available from the UK on British Airways and Iberia.

Colombia’s domestic traffic up 40%; US 35% of international market; Avianca leading airline but Aires growing fast

Fast-growing Aires, which more than trebled its domestic passenger numbers last year, seeks to grow further by expanding its international services. As of March this year, the airline serves Fort Lauderdale from three Colombian airports.According to OAG schedule data, Colombia has 53 airports that currently offer scheduled airline services. The largest of these are Bogota, Medellin, Cali, Cartagena and Baranquilla, with Bogota by far the largest airport offering over five times as much seat capacity as Medellin. According to government statistics air travel demand in Colombia was fairly stable between 1998 and 2003, but has grown by around 50% in the last six years. International traffic is up almost 90% while domestic passenger numbers have risen by almost 40% during the same period.

Source: Aeronáutica Civil de ColombiaBogota airport handled around 15 million passengers in 2009, including transit and transfer passengers. If only origin and destination (O&D) passengers are considered, Bogota handled 11.2 million passengers compared with 2.5 million at both Cali and Medellin.

Dramatic surge in domestic demand in 2010

According to latest civil aviation statistics, Colombia’s domestic air traffic has grown by almost 40% in the first two months of 2010, while international traffic has increased by a more modest 6.5%. The surge in domestic demand has seen all seven domestic carriers increase their passenger numbers with Avianca the leading domestic carrier this year with a 35% share of the market. Aires (which operates a fleet of seven 737-700s, 11 Dash8-200s and one Dash8-300) has more than trebled its passenger numbers from 117,000 in the first two months of 2009 to 392,000 just one year later. It now has a 20% share of the domestic market followed by SAM and AeroRepública (both 17%) and Satena (7%).

Avianca still in the lead: The airline which recently tied up with pan-Central American TACA has a firm grip at 38% of Colombia’s international market, while no competitor makes the 10% mark.International air traffic in Colombia is focused on Bogota, which accounts for around 70% of all international seat capacity in the country, followed by Medellin with just over 10%. According to government statistics, Avianca is the leading airline on international routes with 38% of the market in 2009, followed by AeroRepública and American (both 8%)%2

Spirit Airlines says it will begin offering cheap direct flights between Medellín, Colombia, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2009.

The airline says it will start the flights in March. As a start-up discount, Spirit will offer tickets for the maximum price of US$93, depending on the season and how much in advance the flight is booked. Taxes are excluded from the price.

“The arrival of Spirit marks a new era in the history of tourism in Medellín and Antioquia,” Colombia’s Vice-Minister of Tourism Oscar Rueda Garcia told newspaper El Tiempo. “We are now hoping the best prices will allow more tourism in the region and the country.”

Spirit Airlines already has direct flights to Bogotá and Cartagena.
